What is LASIK Eye Surgery? PDF Print E-mail

By Charles Moore

In the past, once you had bad eyesight there was no way of getting rid of it - this is the case no longer. Tired of clunky glasses, scientists searched for a solution to the eyesight problem- and eventually discovered LASIK.

LASIK is the acronym for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, which is basically a form of laser eye surgery. Although contact lenses allow people with bad eyesight to see normally, this procedure corrects the problem once and for all.

Houston, Texas is one of the best places in the world to undergo this surgery. This city is considered one of the best due to its stringent methods.

While this is an operation to correct bad eyesight by reshaping the cornea, it is not as complicated as other forms of surgery. It is done in two steps; and as it is not painful it can be performed while the patient is awake (although a sedative such as Valium is often used).

In the first step, a corneal flap of tissue is created using a laser, and for the second step, the cornea is reshaped in order to correct bad eyesight. As a laser is used, the cornea is "tricked"; it does not know it has been operated upon and thus many of the old problems of eye surgery (such as corneal haze) are removed.

In the past, a metal blade was used to create the corneal flap, in these days a laser is used- which is both quicker and more comfortable. The laser currently used is the excimer laser; created by Dr. Bhaumik in May, 1973.

As an ultraviolet excimer laser was discovered capable of altering tissue while leaving no heat damage to the surrounding area, scientific breakthroughs were made in the use of the excimer laser for eye surgeries- meaning today's procedures are a lot more simple than those of past generations. Although problems existed in the past, these have since been ironed out and very few problems today are had with this eye surgery.

Now that this eye surgery has been explained, a look must be taken at LASIK eye surgery Houston, Texas. Surgery here is ever expanding and there are many large eye surgery companies here as well.

Patients who undergo Lasik surgery are often times very pleased with the outcome. Aside from the immediate benefits of this procedure, residents often find that they enjoy more freedom, as they can participate an array of activities, from swimming to cycling, without having to worry over bothersome things like contact lenses or glasses.

At the International EyeCare Laser Center, our doctors practice LASIK only - we are specialists. Dr. Charles Moore is instrumental in the design and development of LASIK diagnostic and surgical equipment. For more information visit our site: http://www.texaslasik.com/
