 It still seems that even though laser eye surgery is becoming more of a common thing, there are a lot of misconceptions about the entire procedure and its risk factors. Some people seem to think that there is absolutely nothing at all to worry about and that there is never a need for concern about the surgery. Other people tend to think the worst and are too fearful of the surgery to even begin researching it to see if it is right for them. The fact is though, that yes, there is a risk of laser eye surgery not ending up perfect and having side effects.
As with any sort of surgery in life, no matter how modest, there are risks involved so it is important to make sure that you really are educated in the subject matter
This is no reason though to not have the procedure done though because risks come with just about everything in life anymore.
The risk of laser eye surgery is there but it is not as unhealthful as most people tend to think. |

 LASIK, an acronym for Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a form of refractive laser eye surgery procedure performed by ophthalmologists intended for correcting vision. The procedure is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, as it requires less time for full recovery, and the patient experiences less pain overall.
The LASIK technique was made possible by Dr Jose Barraquer (Colombia), who around 1960 developed the first microkeratome, used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure called keratomileusis. This procedure was developed and pioneered by the world leading Barraquer Clinic, based in Bogota, Colombia.
LASIK surgery was developed in 1990 by Dr. Lucio Buratto (Italy) and Dr. Ioannis Pallikaris (Greece) as a melding of two prior techniques, keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy. It quickly became popular because of its greater precision and lower frequency of complications in comparison with these former two techniques.

 It seems as though there have been millions of seemingly successful procedures since laser eye surgery was first introduced in the United States in 1991. I see commercials for procedures all the time. I have not yet heard about any horror stories involving laser eye surgery nor have I heard about any class action lawsuits filed against the laser eye surgery industry. Unfortunately, I think that they will likely come one day. Like many people, I need a bit more convincing before I sign up for something that sounds as drastic as shaping your eyeball with a laser in order to see better.
You see, I have a light prescription for nearsightedness and would probably make a good candidate for this kind of procedure. I am still waiting for more evidence that this procedure is completely safe. It simply sounds illogical that a laser can be used to shape an eyeball without causing any residual damage. I am going to wait a good while to see if, even after decades, laser eye surgery causes any damage to the patient's eyes. I think |
